At a conference held at Suhrawardy
Udyan, Nahid Islam strongly criticized the current government, claiming that
the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has moved away from its pro-democracy
stance after coming to power.
Speaking on Saturday morning at the
triennial national conference of the Bangladesh Labour Welfare Federation, he
said the party has failed to meet public expectations. “After tasting power,
they have forgotten their past struggles and sacrifices,” he remarked.
Nahid Islam alleged that a
significant portion of votes was not properly reflected and that key
legislative promises remain unfulfilled. He pointed to a lack of progress on
ordinances related to the human rights commission, police reform, and judicial
independence.
He further stated that although
national unity is crucial in the current, the government has failed to maintain
it. Instead, he accused it of increasing political instability by breaking
commitments made to the public.
Hinting at possible street protests,
he said that alongside parliamentary efforts, preparations for mass movements
are necessary to press demands. He also emphasized holding the government
accountable on issues such as workers’ rights and referendums.
In his closing remarks, Nahid Islam
warned that failing to meet public expectations can lead to political
consequences, urging the government to remain mindful of this reality.
