Bangladesh successfully defended their title in the SAFF U-20 Championship, defeating arch-rivals India in a dramatic penalty shootout in Malé, Maldives. After a goalless draw in regulation time, the young Tigers held their nerve to secure a 4–3 victory on penalties.
India started the match on the front foot. In
the 4th minute, Abhrash narrowly missed the target with a header from Rohen’s
cross from the right flank. However, Bangladesh quickly regained control,
applying pressure through both wings as Manik and Ronan Sullivan repeatedly
troubled the Indian defense. In the 13th minute, captain Mithu Chowdhury’s
header from Sullivan’s free-kick went just wide.
Around the 25th minute, Bangladesh
intensified their attacks, putting India under sustained pressure, but failed
to capitalize on a long throw-in opportunity. India also missed a chance in the
35th minute during a counterattack, as their forwards failed to take advantage
of goalkeeper Ismail Hossain Mahin being out of position.
In added time of the first half, Bangladesh
came close again. Ronan Sullivan’s acrobatic effort from Murshed Ali’s pass
sailed just over the crossbar.
Bangladesh adopted a more defensive approach
in the second half. India created several chances but could not find the net.
In the 53rd minute, Omang Dodum’s long-range free-kick was comfortably saved by
Mahin. Another opportunity in the 64th minute, resulting from a goalkeeping
error, also went begging for India.
In the 66th minute, young Declan Sullivan
replaced Nazmul Huda as coach Mark Cox attempted to inject pace into the
attack, but neither side could break the deadlock. India squandered a golden
chance in the 83rd minute, missing the target despite having ample space.
With no goals in regulation or the added four
minutes, the match went to penalties. Bangladesh emerged victorious 4–3 in the
shootout, clinching the championship.
This triumph once again highlights Bangladesh’s growing dominance in South Asian age-level football.
